Mamallapuram
These are the typical tourist trips around Chennai - crocodiles, temples, and so on - and justifiably so. They're wonderful! We drove about an hour down the coast this weekend to an old port town (and UNESCO World Heritage site) called Mamallapuram or Mahalibalipuram. There are amazing stone carvings here. A temple right on the ocean, which may have been part of a series of ancient temples right on the shore, fantastc freizes, and Krishna's butterball. The temple, made of stones moved from elsewhere, was erected about 1400 years ago. Other sites may be earlier. Rebuilding has taken place periodically; the 2004 tsunami took its toll.
