Fatepur Sikri

Driving from Agra to Fatepur Sikri - roadside sights.

 Bus, truck, and camel above.

Snack seller.  Items in jars are cookies or crackers, hanging items may be chips, candy, or sometimes fruit.

Fatepur Sikri: For 10 years in the late 1500s, this city was the capital of the Mughal empire.  Then the water ran out and battles in other regions called away Emperor Akbar; he moved the capital north to Lahore.  When he died, the city was abandoned.  Palace pictures below.

Our great guide Lakmi in the "Jewel box," or hall of private audiences.  The Emperor sat above the column (see below) and discussed petitions & politics with courtiers and visitors.  He was known for being very tolerant of and interested in other religions.  The carvings are amazing.

Ladies' palace.  The harem could sit here, behind silk curtains, and watch entertainment in the courtyard below.  There's a tiled Parcheesi board in the courtyard which was used with human playing pieces, as well as a water garden.

The mosque.
